We extinguish our Havdala candle in wine which was overflowing from the cup into the plate on which the cup is standing. Can you assume that the wax is kosher and the plate therefore remains kosher? What if the wax is treife (much of the candle wax is made from fat remaining in the slaughter houses of the non-Jews), does the plate become treif, since it touched the plate in a hot state? To render a utensil unkosher, a transfer of taste must occur, which happens when the utensil comes into contact with heat at a temperature of 43 degrees Celsius or higher. However, in this particular scenario, the fire is being put directly into the liquid, which means that the required heat is not present.
Therefore, even if the candle is not kosher, the plate remains unaffected.

If you know for sure that the candles contain non-kosher ingredients, then it is certainly better to wash them in a sink other than in the kitchen, and then to wash your hands well before handling food. Reply

A scented candle is good to use for the blessing of the candles as long as there is more than one wick. As for the blessing of the spices, one should try to have actual fragrant leaves that one may recite the blessing according to all opinions.
To explain:
If the smell is to deodorize the room one may not recite a blessing over such a smell. Fragrant leaves are enjoyable on their own and on such things we recite the blessing.
A scented candle can be subject to debate what they are intended for and as such, we enter the realm of doubt and one may not recite the name of Hashem when in doubt. Therefore it is best to use a spice or leaf that we are certain one may recite the blessing over.

The woman may light candles with a lighter herself, no need for a man to do it for her. She does not violate Shabbos by putting out the lighter; she can set it down as usual for it to turn off on its own.
